Cannabis is a genus of flowering plants native to Central Asia. It consists of several species of annual herbaceous plants, ranging from less than 0.5 m (20 inches) to 2.5 m (8 feet) tall; some of them are cultivated worldwide. Cannabis sativa and C. ruderalis are two subspecies whose characteristics differ mainly in genetic traits and morphology. In general, they are considered separate species, though some authors consider both to be subspecies of C. indica. All parts of the plant produce psychoactive compounds upon drying and curing. Most commonly, dried flower buds are consumed as marijuana or hashish, while leaves and stems may be smoked and eaten, respectively. Strains vary widely in potency and in their level of psychoactivity.

3. Marijuana
Marijuana (colloquially known as pot, grass, herb, dope, Mary Jane, reefer, ganja, bud, or joints) is the dry flowers, leaves, and seeds of Cannabis sativa L., a species of hemp grown specifically for its medicinal and recreational uses. Commonly sold globally as’marihuana’, the drug has the potential to cause adverse psychological and physical effects if used incorrectly or excessively. Recreational use of marijuana is illegal in many countries around the world, and medical research remains limited due to legal issues surrounding access and ethical constraints placed on experimentation.
Although the exact history of marijuana’s medicinal uses is not clear, evidence suggests that ancient cultures have utilized and studied the plant medicinally since the beginning of recorded history. Ancient Egyptians chewed on the leaves of C. sativa varietas indica for relief from gastrointestinal disorders, headaches, and menstrual cramps. C. sativa varietal indica was introduced from India to China in approximately 671 CE, likely via Arab merchants, and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. The earliest written documentation of marijuana’s medical use comes from India, where the sacred Hindu text Sushruta Samhita, dating back to 400 BCE, mentions the healing properties of marijuana. During the Roman Empire, marijuana was recommended as a remedy for digestive problems, bronchitis, asthma, eye inflammation, and skin conditions, including psoriasis and eczema.
Marijuana’s sexual application is called “getting high”. According to a study conducted by researchers at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, people who inhaled vaporized marijuana scored higher on tests measuring erectile function than men who did not smoke marijuana.
Smoking marijuana is a method of consumption wherein moistened herbal material derived from Cannabis Sativa L. is burned and inhaled after being heated to a temperature between 300°F (149°C) and 390°F (198°C). When smoking herbal material, the user holds the cigarette or joint filled with the herbs in his mouth until he exhales. Afterward, the user then takes a draw of breath, allowing the smoke to pass over his lungs before exhaling again. The user then repeats this cycle until the entire supply of herbal material has been smoked. Alternatively, users may roll small amounts of herbal material inside a cigar or pipe prior to lighting the end.
THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol, the main active ingredient of cannabis. However, each type of strain contains various levels of THC, depending on how much was bred out through selective breeding. A low-THC variety might be preferred by patients suffering from chronic pain. Other cannabinoids occur naturally in lesser concentrations within cannabis, though these do not affect humans in the same manner. Cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinol (CBN), cannabichromene (CBC), cannabigerol (CBG), and tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) are present in trace amounts and have been shown to interact with the endocannabinoid system.
